Originally, the Sanitary District started in 1959 in Princess Anne where the town manager oversaw the water and sewer service. About 1975, the responsibility for the service was transferred to County government. Besides Princess Anne, the Sanitary District today includes five subdistricts: Crisfield, Fairmount, Rumbley-Frenchtown, offshore Smith Island, and Westover.
Appointed by the Board of County Commissioners, the Sanitary District Commission consists of five members who serve six-year terms.
The Department is responsible for three divisions: General Services, Roads and Waterways, and Solid Waste.
GENERAL SERVICES DIVISION
ROADS & WATERWAYS DIVISION
The Division constructs and maintains County roads and bridges.
SOLID WASTE DIVISION
The Division is responsible for waste management in Somerset County.
The General Services Division was made part of the Department of Public Works in March 2017.
Initially, the Roads Department was a separate department, but reformed as the Roads and Waterways Division when the Department of Public Works was created in March 2017.
The Solid Waste Division began as the Department of Solid Waste, and reformed as the Solid Waste Division under the Department of Public Works in March 2017.
